Glycemic Index, also known as glycaemic index is a ranking system for carbohydrates based on their immediate effect on blood glucose levels. It provides numerical evidence-based index of post-meal glycemia.

 

Carbohydrates that break down rapidly during digestion have the highest indices, which mean an increased blood glucose response occurs rapidly. Carbohydrates that break down slowly, gradually release glucose into the blood stream have low glycemic index.

 

A lower glycemic index equates to lower insulin demand, better long-term blood glucose control and reduction in blood lipids.

Low GI.... less than 55
Intermediate GI... between 56 - 69
High GI...... higher than 70
